Buttonwillow on Sunday will be ONLY 109F, so it should be a fun track day!

Considering it’s supposed to be 111F on Saturday, thankfully I’m only doing Sunday for the upcoming Speed Ventures track day at Buttonwillow. A whole 2 degrees cooler, so maybe I won’t die of heat stroke. Looks like an incredibly fun track so it shall be worth the sweat. Hopefully my tires don’t get too greasy and I’ll probably have to run with the top up so that I don’t melt. Wish me luck!

Time to take the hood off to improve cooling

Buttonwillow is lots of fun! You can spin out pretty much anywhere without hitting anything.

My bachelor party was a track day out there. In August. It was 117F. I wore a black T-shirt and ended up with crusty white sweat stains in the shape of a harness over my shoulders.

It would add too much dirty air. Moar speed or get out!

Have you considered a cool shirt?

No cooling issues with the Miata. One of the times I’m glad to have no power and no forced induction. I'd be more worried about the Subaru in those conditions, but the Miata is a trooper and will do just fine.

That would Eliminate pretty much every track day in Socal lol. Below 100 is perfect if you find shade between heats. I'll have to bring plenty of water and really try to stay out of the sun. No course working like autocross, that I would definitely not go to.

Hoping to not do any spinning, that leads to slower lap times lol. I’d be more worried about the people behind/around me anyways. No qualms with spinning on an autox course, a track is a different story. That’s why I was surprised to see so many people spi n off into the dirt at my first track day. Yeah it was the beginner group so it made sense that people suck, but I guess my self preservation was more important than pushing the limit.

Do you have a SOL-CAL sticker for your car yet? It’s only a matter of time.

Interesting. My beginner group experience at Buttonwillow, nobody spun off, nobody drove like a crazy person, people overtook only in the overtaking areas, pointed by, etc. While still racing hard. It was a blast. We ran the big layout CCW. The S-s at 90+mph in the first afternoon session felt amazing. The last hairpin is brutally difficult to get right (got it maybe once all day), and you can drive most everything in 3rd gear (maybe 4th on the straight).
What car are you taking there?

First track day was at streets of willow, which i guess is a bit tighter/more technical. Perhaps the beginners that day were also overconfident and underqualified. Like sure I had never been on a track, but I had a couple hundred runs of autocross experience to help me with general car control at least. Some of the noobs there had truly never driven on a closed course and were in more unforgiving cars. With a sway bar and proper tires, a Miata is realllllllly hard to upset.

I will be taking the Miata as it is my track car. The more I get used to the Subaru being in my life, the more that will be my daily only. I would like to autocross it some day but hope to avoid tracking it entirely. I would rather only track a car that I am okay financially with turning into a flaming wreck. Autocross is significantly less risk.

That seems appropriate for a Del sol lol. I kind of want one some day. I had test driven one when I was looking for a cheap as hell beater. The one I drove had a stupidly loud exhaust, a ruined suspension, and no power steering. But I still thought the car was awesome. Has some good character to it versus your standard Civic of that era.
